The Special Care Baby Fund raising money for the Special Care Baby Unit at Princess Royal University Hospital, Farnborough Kent
Welcome to the Special Care Baby Fund website

The Special Care Baby Fund has run for over 20 years to support the special Care Baby Unit at Princess Royal University Hospital. The charity raises money to fund additional equipment, staff training and parent facilities to give special care babies and their families the best care possible. The fund also supports other areas within the hospital and the community to assist babies and children with special needs. The board of trustees is made up of parents of special care babies and health care professionals, all of whom volunteer their time and experise to help improve the lives of babies who have had time in special care.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR

Our thanks go to everyone who has supported the charity this year. Your donations have allowed us to support the unit in maintaining the high standards that we have come to expect of Special Care.

Over the last year we have seen an increase in admissions to the unit. In the months of January to October (inclusive) in 2007 we have had a total of 211 admissions to SCBU compared to 215 for January to December 2006.

This has meant not only an increased workload for the team on SCBU but also for the two home care teams and the milk bank.

Looking at the feedback we have received from parents the increased workload has not impacted on the quality of care we have been able to offer.

Many of you will have read in the local press of proposals to change how the four local hospitals work together and offer services. The provision of Special Care Baby Units across the four sites is part of this proposal and the charity is being kept updated by the unit on the proposed changes. If proposals go ahead then the joint hospitals consortium will fund any major changes and additional equipment needed by the units, and the fund will work with the hospital in maintaining the high standard of parent facilities needed. With this in mind the charity has kept back funds this year so that we can implement any changes needed in the near future. Community Home Care Team

Bromley have two Home Care Teams supporting babies in their home environment. The hospital based team is an acute team looking after the short-term needs of babies after discharge from hospital. The cares for babies with chronic conditions who need long-term or life-long clinical care. They support babies discharged from our own unit and babies from other hospital units within London who live in Bromley. Community Home Care Team.

This year we were pleased to support the Community Team by purchasing two specialised Apnoea monitors that will alert and record if the baby is experiencing breathing difficulties.

Supporting both of these teams means that we are helping to discharge babies home so they can be with their parents and siblings.

This allows parents to provide the love and special care their babies need in their own home but with the support of our home care nurses.
